Prostitutes hunger striking

Hunger strike for the right to work. About 50 prostitutes in Bolivia have gone on hunger strike to protest against the closing of bars and striptease clubs. The women are threatening to go on with “naked protest”.

La Paz – Women from El Alto in the neighbourhood of La Paz want the lately closed bars and striptease clubs to be re-opened. They are fighting for their right to work. “We all have the required HIV-tests”, said the protests’ leader at the Aids hospital from El Alto where the prostitutes have gathered for their strike. In order to keep their jobs they are lurking to run through the streets without clothes.

Bars and clubs had been close down after a huge demonstration of El Alto’s residents. They regard those bars as centers of attraction to criminals and they are afraid of a bad influence on their children. In El Alto an estimated number of 400 to 500 prostitutes are working for an average daily wage of about 30 Euro.
