1. How do you see the announcements in Spain, the government saying sex industry needs to be stopped, and on the other hand – some of the workers, like the workers from union OTRAS, asking for more regulation and better working conditions?
Il lavoro sessuale va regolamentato e decriminalizzato. Da tempo orami è riconsciuto l’impatto negativo della criminalizzazione del lavoro sessuale sulla vita delle persone che sercitano il sex work in quanto le rende maggiormente vulnerabile e ricattabile. L’annuncio del PM spagnolo non solo non prende in considerazioni le istanze dei gruppi organizzati di sex worker sull’impatto che ha la criminalizzazione del lavoro sessuale ma non riconosce nemmeno l’autodeterminazione di chi sceglie autonomamente di esercitare il sex work. La rivendicazione di riconscere il sex work come lavoro è una leggittima richiesta di veder riconoscere i diritti umani cittadine e cittadini che chiedono di lavorare in modo tutelato.
The negative impact of the criminalization of sex work on the lives of people who engage in consensual sex work has long been recognized by international organizations such as Amnesty International as it renders sex workers more vulnerable. Sex work must be regulated and decriminalized. Evidence-based research has shown that the criminalization of sex work reinforces the marginalization of sex workers and their exclusion from society. The Spanish Prime Minister’s announcement fails to take into consideration the negative impact of criminalization on the lives of sex workers. It fails to recognize the self-determination of sex workers. Above all the Spanish Prime Minister fails to consult with sex worker-led organizations in Spain. We endorse the legitimate demand for the recognition of the human rights of sex workers and better working conditions by Otras – the sex worker trade union.
2. You are a sex worker-led and community-based organization. How do you manage to advocate and organize, since you have members that are especially discriminated against in the society – sex workers, but also migrant women, trans women, etc? Is it hard to organize and get your voice heard?
E’ proprio perché la categoria di lavoratrici e lavoratori sessuali è fortemente stigmatizzata, discriminata e marginalizzata che è nata la nostra associazione per denunciare i soprusi e le aggressioni contro i/le sex workers 40 anni fa. E’ importante dare ascolto e voce a chi essercita il sex work come anche portare le istanze di chi rappresentiamo dai policy makers per farsì che adottino misure rispettose dei diritti umani dei sex workers che siano migranti, trans o autoctono. Il riconoscimento del lavoro sessuale come lavoro permetterebbe alle donne migranti o transgender di avere un permesso di soggiorno per motivi di lavoro e per alcune, ciò significherebbe liberarsi da chi le sfrutta, di avere un reddito, di avere accesso ai serivizi sanitari e sociali. Gli ostacoli ci sono sempre ma è importante non abbassare la guardia e lasciare che siano persone terze a parlare di una categoria organizzata e conoscitore dell’impatto negativo di leggi penalizzanti sulle proprie vite come il modello svedese.
It is precisely because the category of sex workers is strongly stigmatized, discriminated against, and marginalized that our organization was created to denounce the abuses and attacks against sex workers 40 years ago. It is important to listen and give voice to sex workers; it is also important to advocate for the human rights of sex workers with policymakers in order to avoid them adopting repressive measures and policies that do not recognize the human rights of sex workers. The recognition of sex work as work would allow migrant or transgenders to have a residence permit for work, to have an income, to have equal access to justice, health, and social services, and, for some this would mean freeing themselves from those who exploit them. As an organization that fights for the rights of marginalized populations, it is important to speak out against all harmful laws and policies aimed at eliminating sex work or implementing harmful laws on the lives of sex workers such as the Swedish model.
